During the Interview

1.    Do describe your qualifications and experiences positively.

2.  Don’t be critical of your past employers or past situations.

3.  Don’t bring up personal or past employment problems.

4.  Do be prepared to tactfully any difficulties you may have experienced on previous jobs if asked.

5.  Don’t be vague, evasive, or make excuses.

6.  Do make your answers informative – stick to the point and be brief.

7.  Don’t give one-word answers.

8.  Don’t be non-committal, overly casual, or indifferent.

9.  Don’t be over confident, overbearing or self centered.

10. Do discuss your employment needs and preferences with an attitude of negotiability.

11. Do use inductive rather than deductive descriptions as examples by presenting your key idea first (such as “I am dependable”) and then support it with one or two clear examples (“At my last job I received a certificate for perfect attendance”).

12. Do be prepared to ask questions – about the company, about the specific job duties, about when the company will determine an outcome from the interviews, and to clarify a question you do not understand.

13. Do ask questions one at a time.

15. Don’t ask about or discuss salary for the position during the first interview, unless you are asked.

14. Don’t use counter questions or demonstrate evasiveness.

16. Don’t interrupt or cut off the interviewer.

17. Do thank the interviewer and leave the interview promptly.
